Seventeen Mile Rocks is a residential suburb positioned on the Brisbane River 11km south-west of the Brisbane CBD. The suburb is named after the submerged ridge of rock that runs diagonally across the river near the end of Counihan Road, 17 miles upriver from the penal settlement. The river in that area, also known as Mermaid Reach, was regarded as one of the finest stretches and was a popular destination for day trippers on the river steamers in the late 1800s. This same stretch is now home to the Rocks Riverside Park. Shopping and schooling options are conveniently located in nearby Sinnamon Park, Jindalee, Darra and Mount Ommaney. Easy access is available to public transport including buses and the Oxley train station.
